Mike Van Hofwegen, Executitve Director
I am sometimes asked why I am serving as the director of a community organization in a primarily Latino area. Why me?
The reason is that I love the people who live here. My passion and calling is to serve the Monument Community - Latinos and others. My children were born in Costa Rica where I learned Spanish and grew to appreciate people from all different backgrounds. I’ve also grown though other experiences, such as losing our home during a hurricane in Miami and working closely with survivors of abuse in Vancouver, Canada.
On the road to self-sufficiency and a better quality of life, health and safety cannot be ignored. This is why we have taken the lead in bringing information, screenings and pathways to a better future to low-income residents.
The Career Development program is designed to assist welfare recipients to obtain or prepare for employment, as well as achieve financial independence. We assist participants in the process of acculturation, English as a second Language, Soft Skills and guidance to enter work force.
Community Engagement isn't just about giving information. It's about empowering people with the tools they need to make a difference in the community.
It is no question that technology is becoming an integral piece of our daily lives. Researching for a paper, searching for a job, viewing this webpage, learning English, and an infinite number of possibilities open up with computer use.
Our youth programs which include Go Get It! (GGI), offers a tutoring and mentorship program. The program strives to create a community that empowers and prepares underserved youth with the personal and academic development necessary for college. GGI hopes to increase career success by connecting students to mentors, and parents who give back to our community.
